I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We’ll be there as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start mopping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and remove important possessions from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
