I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water isolating tap to cut off all water to the residence.

Once that’s sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, position a container to catch any drips, and remove important things from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
