I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
